After graduating from Cambridge University, he trained in respiratory medicine and clinical pharmacology in Manchester. He was appointed Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Respiratory Medicine at the University of Manchester in 2011. His research interests are the pharmacotherapy of asthma and COPD, with studies spanning from basic pharmacology of anti-inflammatory drugs to clinical trials. He has acted as principal investigator on numerous clinical trials of novel therapies in asthma and COPD, and has over 130 publications in peer reviewed journals. He is a member of the GOLD science committee.
